Customers Moving Away from Batch Data Warehousing

on Jan 29 in Database miscellaneous, Use cases posted by Dave Menninger

In last week’s webinar on Warehousing for Low Latency Analytics we polled our audience to see what their desired level of latency was versus the existing level of latency in their warehouses. The results were surprising – both to our featured speaker, Philip Howard of Bloor Research and to me. I expected an interest in reducing the latency in data warehouses, but I didn’t expect the magnitude of the shift to be as large as it was.

Last week Vertica hosted a webinar targeted primarily to communication service providers (CSPs). Hundreds of participants tuned in to hear what Comcast, Level(3) and Sigma Systems had to say about the data management challenges facing CSPs today and what new technologies and best practices are on the horizon for 2010. Two things were clear based on the survey questions asked during the webinar: CSPs need more real-time reporting capabilities and they are considering specialized DBMS architectures to deliver more capabilities to their users.

High Velocity Analytics

I recently gave a talk at the SDForum Business Intelligence Special Interest Group on the evolution of BI from batch-oriented to high velocity analytics. The premise of my talk is based on observing a common set of characteristics in many of our customer implementations. Business intelligence (or analytics as many now call it) originated as a monthly, weekly and more recently nightly batch process often associated with back office functions where numbers were collected from numerous systems and crunched to evaluate the state of the business. This periodic, batch oriented BI continues to take place today in some of the world’s most successful companies and it is an important part of the business. But if the reports are a day late it has very little impact on day to day operations.
